Most upholsteery foam of 'good' and better quality and above is 'open cell'. The best way to prevent water, vapor and 'stink' permeation is to apply/glue a latex membrane on the top and all sides (the same latex used in condoms, etc. .... the sealed bottom usually face a vinyl bottom facing of the fabric covering. The latex sheet is available from most upholsterer supply sources.
