The R terminal is an auxiliary terminal it should have 7v output. that is the terminal your tach gets hooked up to. The R terminal is also used to flash (or energize) the alternator field if the magnetism in the rotor has weakened from not being used in a long period of time. The L terminal should be for the volt meter or indicator light. Not really sure what the P terminal is for though.
