Ranger 26 Racing
I've been campaigning MoAir (hull #64) in SW Florida for two years. We've learned quite a bit about making her go fast in that time. We race in a PHRF fleet under a non-spinnaker classification. In non-spin no time is assessed or awarded for the type of sails you use, Mylar vs. Dacron for example. However you are rated based on the size of your largest headsail. In our fleet you remain at zero with a 155% Genoa declared as your largest sail. Going larger costs you time and like wise going smaller gives you time. We found that we are as fast or faster with a 135% in any air over 10 knots. Since our average winter winds are 10-15 we took the ratings gain of :03 seconds per mile by declaring the 135 as our largest sail. Given that the difference between 2nd and 5th over a 10 mile course can be less than 1 minute the :30 seconds overall gain can be significant. Our target speed with the 135 is around 5.8kts to 6.2kts on a close reach and low to mid 6's reaching and off wind. I am sharing this as I'm interested to open a discussion with others who are actively racing their 26's in hopes of gaining and sharing go fast tips.
