There's good "e-book" software out there that does not have the drawbacks of the kindle...and do not require a proprietary, single-purpose, reader device. MobiPocket is one of them, and runs on a lot of different platforms.
I'm cautious of Amazon and the Kindle but I noted that Barnes and Noble has a reader out so I know there are alternatives. Thanks for the suggestion, Sailingdog. I'll be looking into it.
