Hello, I've been lurking around reading up for a while and decided to register and introduce myself. I picked the name SantaCruising because I'm from Santa Cruz California, and of love sailing. I first sailed in summer camp at the age of 9, a Hobie cat on a small lake with little wind, but that's all I did the entire summer.I Grew up on the coast and have always been drawn to the sea.We moved to San Francisco when I was a teen, where the whole bay/fishing/sailing culture kept me interested.
Now I'm 34, and live right off the Columbia river in Portland Oregon. Lots of sailboats around. My Father in Law and his brother have a 29 foot cascade on the river, and we go out occasionally, but they do not venture far and spend a large percentage of that with the Volvo thumping and the sales still in covers..
Ive never owned my own boat, but lately the bug has been biting me. I think my goal boat would be a Flicka 20, but I'm sure ill have to settle for much less for my first.
The concept of small and capable seems more ideal to me than a large yacht. (although....those tall ships are sexy, everyone loves square rigged wood ships. H.M.S bounty is for sale right?) I have this idea, mad as it may seem even to myself, of learning to sail, finding the right boat, and going from Portland to San Francisco, off to Hawaii, NE to Seattle and back to Portland. This is at least 10 years off, but hey it always starts with a dream.
Ive found this community to be extremely informative, often polarized, and sometimes downright hilarious. I'm hoping my lack of experience (Im a painter) and any valid opinions on the matter( I don't want a Macgregor), alongside my willingness to learn and take a joke, should keep me in SailNet's good graces.
