I didn't know that. I only just got one maybe two years ago and sailed without one for 5 seasons. Nobody told me they were required. Anyway I have a cheapo mobi long cylindrical styled one hanging off the spreader tip. I hope they see me with that, but if not, I always see them and stay out of the way and I am not ever a night sailor nor fog sailor. Just a fair weather day sailor.
