... just putting a boat (Grampian Discovery 7.9) I bought last fall in the water. Had trouble getting the diesel going but its running now.

Question is, looking at the back of the engine (from the saildrive side) what mechanism is the 'Cold Start' and which is the 'Stop Control' - bottom left versus upper right? The actual pull switches on the instrument panel aren't labelled and may not be standard/same as yours (hence my reference to the actual mechanisms on the engine itself). I have the manuals but they don't really tell/show you - they just say when to use them.
