islander 28 leaks at port floor, aft of keel
We have purchased an Islander 28 "JerLu" on Lake Michigan at Milwaukee WI.
It has been in its cradle on the hard for possibly two years. Although I noted some deflection at the aft cradle pads, the hull is in good condition. We have cleaned over all and re-coated the bottom with Interlux VC 17M.
When swung in the shaft dribbled a bit and we slowed that to an occasional drip. I was very surprised six hours later to find the bilge full to four inches below the floors...
I and one of the guys from the yard double checked the through hull fittings and were on our third check when I noticed what looks like a vertical crack running the top four inches of the back of the keel fairing. I also noted some water coming in from under the last floor "timber" on the port side.
I do not find water under the port settee but there is a puddle to either side, on the flat bottom, aft of the keel.
If anyone has experiences or hearsay, I welcome the input.
This is Saturday evening. On Monday AM we will go for a sling ride and see if we can find and repair the source (sources?) of the intrusion.
The silver lining is that I found the bilge pump to be unreliable and have replaced the Rule 1500 with the 2000 , clearing up a wiring nightmare in the process.
My mantra? "It's Pleasure Boating..."
