Welcome aboard, Titus.
The Hobie is a great boat, and as far as a boat to learn on? Hey, any boat that gets you on the water is a great boat to learn on. Having said that, location is a big factor. Big water and big swells prefer bigger boats. Where are you sailing out of?
There are some differences in technique between sailing a catamaran and a traditional monohull, but on small boats like the Hobie those differences are relatively minor. As cats go, small hobies are pretty forgiving. Does your hobie have the flotation ball at the top of the mast to prevent the boat from turning turtle when capsized? if not, it may be something to look into, because as a newbie, it is never a matter of IF you lay her down, but WHEN.
Do you have a more experienced mentor who can hit the water with you the first cou0ple of times, to give you a little guidance?
