traveler and standing rigging on 22' Oday

I recently bought my first "real" sailboat-a 1974 22' Oday. Apparently it was built as a budget model. It doesn't have a traveler. The mainsheet is attached to a small triangle on the backstay. It works ok but I think I'm missing some of the fine tuning available if I had a traveler. I've seen travelers mounted on the cabin top but I think it would clutter up access to and from the cockpit. Since the mainsheet is attached to the aft end of the boom would it be practical to mount an aftermarket traveler on the transom?
If so, how long should it be?-Full width or somewhat shorter? Also I'm guessing the standing rigging is original and should be replaced. What is a good source for "ready-made" replacement parts?
