How do you know it's broken? You said, "apparently".
Loose coupling? Loose or missing prop? Bad transmission or V-drive?
Did you actually see the shaft end that goes into the V-drive turning with the engine in gear?
BTW, I agree with you...it's not often you see a broken 1.25" shaft unless there has been some major stress...like running up on rocks at full speed :-)
