Hi. I've got a 1974 R-23 with a 6hp Nissan o/b on a Gaerlick motor mount. The mount is a scissors type that extends the motor down and away from the stern when the motor is lowered. It was a big mistake, but I'm stuck with it now. Reaching through the stern pulpit and extending a couple of feet over the transom to reach the shifter makes close quarters maneuvering difficult, if not downright hazardous.
Nissan makes a remote throttle/shifter control for this engine, but it is over $500. Not an option. So, I'm wondering if a throttle or choke control from a lawn mower could be adapted. I plan to mount whatever gadget I come up with to the top of the tiller, with the cable running over the transom out to the shifter on the side of the engine. It's about 3 feet away. I need about 2" of travel in each direction. Has anybody done such a kludge? Thanks for listening.
