Tom makes a good point. Neutral can be a bit difficult to find such that the shaft is not spinning at all. Small increments in the shift lever will usually do the trick I have found.
You probably know this already but don't run the engine on the hard in forward or reverse. I found out the hard way and had to re-pack the stuffing box.
