Shouldn't be a problem -- yes, perfect 'neutral' is a bit touch and go, but the idea is to avoid running it in forward or reverse on the hard. Slow revolutions for a few secs are not going to do any damage. Have someone standing outside the boat who can watch (keeping hands, clothing, etc. clear) while you adjust to find neutral. When you DO find it, mark the fiberglass near the shifter with a pencil so you'll know where it is next time.
Additionally and VERY IMPORTANT, do not crank the engine with the intake hose in a bucket of water. Unless it turns over right away, you'll risk flooding the cylinders with water and create a real headache. As soon as the engine turns over, THEN put the hose into 5 gal bucket. Keep your eye on the bucket -- it can empty pretty fast if lines are clear.
