One note on building/modifying a trailer. While it's obvious that one doesn't want to use a trailer with too light a capacity, it can also be problematic to use one with too heavy a capacity. If the springs of the trailer's suspension are too stiff, the boat can suffer from all the resultant rattling and bouncing around. Making sure that the boat is well supported and tied down tight to the trailer helps. But, if the trailer hits a pothole on the highway, and the suspension is too stiff to smoothly absorb the shock, the force generated by the inertia your 3 ton "baby" has to be absorbed by the hull and the relatively small contact areas between the hull and the trailer.
