It is indeed the support issue that needs to be addressed. I happen to work remotely already as development work is indeed relatively easy to do away from the office (even easier due to lack of a manager or meeting interrupting every five minutes!), but I need to be on-call for support for our clients.
We've also dipped our toe in the retail market and, while it is relatively lucrative, it comes with even more support problems than turn-key or contract development. Much as I would like to believe otherwise, I really don't think there is a consistently paying market for developers who can disappear for weeks at a time without much (if anything) in the way of notice.
