Locating a Surveyor

What's the best way to go about locating a reliable, knowledgeable surveyor for a sailboat? Is there some sort of surveyor's association or regional listing of boat surveyors?

Jon Shattuck responds:

Usually the best sources for surveyor referrals are boatyards, brokers, and boat owners who have worked with surveyors. However, it's important to know that not all surveyors are equal, so you should talk to those available and make your selection based upon who you think is the most experienced and knowledgeable about the boat you are buying.

Remember, it's not uncommon for surveyors to travel fairly long distances to inspect a prospective boat. Considering the cost of larger vessels, the price of a plane ticket and a hotel room for the surveyor is really a small price to pay in order to make sure you have the best surveyor for the job.

Yes, like most professions, there are professional asssociations for marine surveyors. You can also search for a surveyor on their websites:

Personally, I have always had success by inquiring for a referral. This helps ensure you have the best professional fault finder working for you! Best of luck with your search.
