Sail year round here on the Chesapeake Bay, but last weekend we "Summerized" the boat--meaning we flushed out the potable antifreeze and filled the water tanks with filtered fresh water. During the winter, we sail on the bay with what we carry on in a gallon jug to wash the dishes. I understand the requirement for hauling your boat for the winter in New England or Lake Michigan, etc., but do not understand the reason why people haul their boats on the Chesapeake Bay (I'm from New England). On the bay, we get a lot of sailing in all winter. There are many 50 degree days thru where you can go out for a great day sail with no other boats around. Yes, you might have to dress warmly, but we have a coleman heater below to keep it comfortable. For bottom work, we take it out for a week in July to get the bottom painted and zincs changed when the rates are less costly (and it's too hot to go out anyway). Chesapeake sailors really miss out on great sailing by pulling their boats. The winds are better, there's no traffic, there's no "shake and bake" (heat with no wind), crab pots are non-existent, and the air is clear.
