Used a Saturn Outlook, FWD, with trailer towing package (rated for 4,000#) and didn't have a problem. I used a Chevy PU K1500 4WD before that and will say the longer the wheelbase, the easier it handles at highway speeds with a crosswind. You shouldn't have a problem with your Explorer.
