I've seen this done as well, and what I'm considering. Lowes has the smallest window units for just over $100....you can set it on the front hatch and use a towel to cover the gaps...just let it blow down the hatch. Nice and cool in the v berth, and use a fan to help it circulate to the cabin and aft. A guy posted this in another forum and said it works well. Basically, same concept as a Cruiseair, but without the plastic housing and relocated controls....but considering the price difference it's a very viable alternative.

I've also considered mounting this small unit at the base of the companionway. Probably a better install for cooling efficiency, but it makes entry/exit just a little bit of a pain.
