Great advice about the drill. A friend of mine showed me that one. Can you be more specific about obtaining a winch bit from the sailing magazines? I haven't found one so far. Thanks very much.
a couple of other items about the "drill bit for a winch"
a piece of old wetsuit neoprene glued around the main part of the drill keeps the scratches off the deck,( do not cover the drill vents) and there is a shear pin on the drill shaft you can replace with a stainless steel heavy gauge that won't break as fast under load.
The sales page shows someone running a crew member to the top of the mast with this setup, and it works great, but make sure you have a second halyard and a safety line on the crew. It can run you up there a little TOO fast!
