steering linkage failure...

As this my first season learning to sail, I have experienced my first major setback.

Last night while coming home at sunset something in the linkage of my pedestal steering ket snapped leaving the rudder useless. I haven't opened it yet to view the damage but it felt and sounded like a good pop.

My 72 catalina 22 has an aftermarket pedestal kit made in 1974, I believe its made by steering componnents? It is white and has a small compass on top of the pedestal. I do still have the original tiller handle so I can move the rudder if I want, but the unique wheel was great.

My two options or to try and fix it or have it removed completely and then have about. 6" diameter hole in my cockpit floor covered.

Anyone have thoughts or suggestions? Pretty bummed.
