Talking Advice on boats for a newbie sailor

Hello everyone,

I am a new sailor and new to Sailnet. I'll be completing certification in basic keelboat, basic cruising, and bareboat cruising in the next few weeks and I am considering purchasing my own boat. I'm hoping to get input from other sailors about things to consider in boat selection.

The factors I am considering are: most of the time I will need to single-hand the boat, I would like to be able to get a handful of friends on board comfortably for a daysail, and I would eventually like to be able to do some extended coastal cruising (2-4 people). So my concern is picking a boat that is relatively easy to single hand while also still being large enough to comfortably accomodate friends and even do some extended coastal cruising. I'll be sailing exclusively in the Great Lakes for the foreseeable future. My price range is up to 40,000, maybe a little more for the right boat, so I know I will be getting an older boat that will need to be surveyed.

Thanks,

GRR
