Thank you Siamese,

If I decide to buy myself a pet for some company it will be after I've bought a boat (live-aboard) and will go with a kitten or puppy so that the boat is home that he/she grows up in.

Scratching posts for a cat is a must to protect sail covering etc

One advantage of a dog to a cat (with the possible exception of a Bengal) is that a dog could come everywhere with me trips out in the car etc

has anybody had experience or can comment on marina based living for any length of time and leaving animals on board whilst you go ashore to go out for a meal in a restaurant, out for the day or do a grocery shop etc

How do animals tend to fare when left on board by themselves?
I'm thinking from a point of view of confined space as opposed to leaving an animal at home for the day?

Or how do animals fare if anchored in a bay and you take the tender to visit the shore for example?
