I was looking at a project boat for sale the other day. The owner was a newbie who had only owned the boat about 4 months and had decided the most important project (rotten bulkheads at the chain plates) was more than he wanted to tackle. He never had the boat out of the water, much less a survey performed (so who knows what lurks beneath!). He told me that he had sailed the boat once, during Fleet Week. He assured me; "She sails real nice!".
I asked him what an instrument was with a cover on it. He didn't know and pulled the cover off. It was the VHF. I said "obviously, you don't know if it works?" He replied "no". I said...."so you didn't have it on when you went out?". He said "no...should I have?"
Let's review: A novice, sailing a neglected 30 foot boat in the SF Bay. He doesn't even know he has a VHF radio (much less how to use it!). What could possibly go wrong?
