Presumably if you ripped a sail in a storm, you would take it down and ride out the rest of the storm with a smaller sail, or motor. Then when things calm down, you could raise your baggy, back-up sail to keep moving. This will either get you to port, or give you time to repair the primary sail. There are probably a number of parts that are kept onboard as back-ups that are only ment to be used to limp back to port in the case of primary equipment failure.
