Catalina should be around 4.5 hours to get there from San Pedro (22 nm). That's the closest point and where we sail out of. We sail to Catalina several times a year and enjoy it. If you sail to Avalon there are bars, restaurants, and shops to visit. Decent night life. Two Harbors is more rustic and good for hiking and sight seeing the hills. A few restaurants and a few bars there, too. We prefer Two Harbors because it is quiet and not as pretentious. We love it and will continue to sail there.

Seas are normally not that bad - 6-8 feet with winds around 12-15 knots. Sometimes really calm, too. One trip we had two foot swells at 20 seconds with 15 knot winds. Averaged 7.5 knots all the way there and it was great! Weather is fairly constant. We have been out in a gale with 30+ seas.

We've sailed around the Channel Islands to the north, too. Really nice for sailing around, but not an end destination. Just pretty sights and wildlife.
