Turns out the locking arm is bent slightly upwarsd and outwards, less than 2 mm but just enough for the tailing sheet to get caught in it, forcing out the key of the self tailing mechanism, allowing the sheet to double up and jam under the arm. It is brand new so Lewmar should replace the part, rather than me attempting repair with the subtlety of a sledge hammer, which, I suspect could easily make matters worse!
