The major difference is, with the Pertronix you can keep your points and condenser, then in case of a breakdown you can easily reinstall the point system. Oh and the price

As to reliability, they both are good units and perform very well. I have installed both systems in customers boats will little call backs from either.

The only problem I have found is with the coil. The original coil I am talking about. It seems the units eat up standard coils quite quickly. I would highly recommend the high output coils.

I am not a mechanic but a marine electronic engineer and I can even install them. That is how I figured out the coil problem on the first couple of installations.
