It would be worth your while to find some long term cruisers and see exactly how they do this.
I am assuming that your
hatch opens from the back. Think about turning it round.
If you get rain and strong winds together expect to get rain down the
hatch regardless of the layout so dont leave it open when you are not on the boat.
