We use a hatch cover as you described out of sunbrella to help avoid the early morning light as well as keep the sun off the hatch. It also allows us to leave a hatch cracked for ventilation in the rain.

Single centerline batten, corner grommets and shockcords, suspended from the pole lift or a halyard.
