It used to be easier to handle since the largest sails were smaller, but with furling alternatives that's no longer true. Advantages that stand are pretty much limited to increased sail options as alternatives to reefing and a lower vertical clearance for access under certain fixed bridges. Disadvantages include the increase in rigging, chainplates and hardware. Some may feel that there is an aesthetic factor, but I'm not one to give that any significance.
