Re: Reasons for knowing TVMDCAW
I ended up using what I call "brute force" and just memorized the "TVMDC+W" then added the arrows and such. I always put the whole thing down and then fill in the blanks.
When I teach charting or navigating I hand out (or give the link) a sheet to my students that I started many years ago when I first joined the CG Aux. The sheet has the formula, time/distance/speed circle and formulas as well as notes on the proper format for writing plots on a chart. One of my instructors took a wood burning pencil and burned TVMDC into his nav station.
I print the sheet double sided on heavy card stock of CONTRASTING color (harder to loose) (5x8 inches or half a letter size sheet - yes two sizes are available) PDF - I have laminated many sheets as gifts for friends.
Since this is my first post I see that I can't leave a link - but my name should link to my modest web site and look for the article "Piloting and Navigators Quick Reference" or Google should also get you there on the article title.
I hope the sheet helps
