I don't want to burst your bubble on this. I think this is a great idea. In fact, last year, I seriously contemplated moving from DC to Houston. In the process, I considered sailing my boat around Florida, as you are considering. For me, opportunity cost alone made shipping the boat far more economical, but as you state, "where is the adventure in that?"

Your choices are basically transit the ICW down to Florida, or sail to Bermuda and then around Florida. I don't think bucking the Gulf Stream all the way to the FL Keys is really an option. The recent Bermuda Ocean Race had boats in Divison 4 finishing in about seven days. Say another seven days to round Florida and say six more days to Texas is 20 days non-stop. The canal route would take, I dunno, three weeks? Understand it is possible to cut across Florida via the canals, which would help cut down travel time.
