Red face "Modern" Dinghies

Years ago I sailed quite often. I want to revisit that hobby and am looking for a boat. The (old) ones I am familiar with are the Thistle, Lightning, Highlander, Flying Scot, and Buccaneer 18. What are some "Modern" boats of this same general type (16'-20' race/cruiser, fairly fast)?

When I read about "modern boats" they are usually referring to light weight boats with a foam sandwich hull, little or no transom, a gennaker, and perhaps "wings" and/or a trapeze. Many of these boats are European. In addition, I want a boat with some freeboard height, not a skiff or scow. (I want to sit in it, not on it.)

In my post below, Greg suggested the VX One. It looks great but no used ones available yet. Are the Laser 16 or Laser Stratos "modern" boats of the type I am looking for? Are there any others?

I hope to hear from you,
Richard
