Brings to mind another less than idiot-proof device: the M1950 Yukon stove.

This was one great multifuel space heater, and would burn both solid and liquid fuel. Regretably, the liquid fuel burner was designed for MOGAS (regular gasoline, for you non-military types) which was of course it's most efficient and popular fuel particularly back in the days before every piece of equipment was standardized to use diesel. In the space heater world, a Yukon was hands down better than its diesel equivalent, the pot-belly stove.

Alas, the safety folks finally got their wish and had the Yukon purged from the field -- I never forgave them for that
