Speaking as a 5-year-plus liveaboard, there are three things that are important: 1) heavy displacement/full keel will keep you more or less upright on a windy or choppy day. You don't want to live in a galloping gurdy. 2) Solid construction - thick fiberglass in cold climates reduces condensation and keeps the boat warmer. 3) Storage - lots of it.
All this militates for going toward the cruising end rather than the coastal end of the spectrum.
