David, I can't say there was a lot of thought put into the strap length. I asked our canvas guy to add short straps and snaps and that's the just length he used. When we got the cushions to the boat I screwed the snaps into the fiberglass at that length.

That said the longer strap means I can tip the cushions back and clean underneath occasionally without undoing all the snaps. So it worked out to be a good thing.

I do have to clean under the cushions a couple of times a season. Our boat doesn't sit quite level so I'll get a bit of mildew starting under the starboard cushion. A little boat soap and a brush seem to do the trick. The bottoms are phifertex and the tops are sunbrella so the dirt washes right off.
