I thought about what way it should go before mounting. I think it looks better going port-starboard, but in that direction there is more of a chance of hitting the bar with your foot (and maybe tripping) when doing work at the bow, especially in rough conditions. It makes no differance when tying lines, although I have found since installing, it may be easier to tie off the lines with the bar mounted fore-aft as mine is. The mooring bit does take up space, and I probably could have used the next size down, but I'd rather have too big than too small.
