It could also have to do with the shorter hoist on the new sail. There is more halyard between the mast exit and the swivel, and it will be at a shallower angle, more parallel to the forestay, and as result it could twist around the forestay.
This is exactly right. Have your favorite sail loft make a penant for you that is the same length as the differences in the sail luffs so the head raises all up the forestay.
