jh, the LIRR does go all the way out. But coming down from CT, you may be better off getting the ferry from Bridgeport CT to Port Jefferson, LI and then taking the train out from there. The ferry isn't cheap but then again, it cuts hours off the trip and $$ off the train rides.

I also think of East Hampton as being one of "the" Hamptons, which are on the South Shore. But apparently EH township extends all the way to the north shore so 3MH sounds more likely.
