Gary - I had a sledge hammer and was pounding at the same time I rotated them with a 2' rebar through the loop. It wasn't enough to get them to engage. If I had a shovel I would have tried to dig through the gravel, but I ran out of light and had to head in. The boat came out fine, so no regrets. Next week I'll step the mast, which makes it virtually impossible to blow the boat over.
