Re: Repainting motor help
Good Evening O-30, I just finished repainting my old Atomic 4 with POR-15's engine paint kit. It turned out remarkable. Prior to using the two different cleaners included with the kit, I scraped loose paint off with a wire brush. Then soaked the engine in simple green while scrubbing with a stiff brush. I repeated this until water did not bead on the metal. This meant grease and oil were not present. The chemical used by POR is called "Marine Clean". It is apparently water based. The second is used for the proper adhesion of the POR15. Not sure what it is. Just remember; heavy solvents, though great for breaking up the grease and oil, will sometimes leave a residue of their own. I have found that most metals take paint better after an "etching" type primer is used. Hope this helped.
