I am a Norwegian living in Norway.

I am planning on travelling to Florida to buy a used sailboat for cruising in the Caribbean, now in late November. I will most likely spend some weeks (maybe around 3 weeks) in Florida, finding a boat and making preparations on the boat for the trip further. I will most likely spend around 25000 USD on a monohull suited for long distance cruising.

I have not the exact route planned, but first stop would most likely be the Bahamas, before i continue southward.

After I leave by sailboat I have no immediate plans to reenter The US, nor take it back to Norway. I will most likely sell the boat again after a year or two of cruising.

Does anybody have any experience or advice on the topic?
How do I best avoid the VAT?
Any other pitfalls or "musts"?
