Mine has a grease fitting as well and it seems to replace the water for lubrication and cooling. There is a grease gun mounted on the bulkhead over the engine with a hose to the stuffing box. I give the screw cap a turn every 20 hours or so. I was also skeptical about the grease fitting until I saw it used extensively in fishing boats here. I can say that after a long run on the engine the stuffing box is still cool to touch. The other benefit is that I don't have a drip at the gland.
