I concur with Chuckles about the Raymarine unit. We have that plus our I Pad. There are many other advantages to the chartplotter. Radar ( superimposed over cartography), AIS etc. For its cost a good chartplotter is a good investment. It should outlive the I PAD as well in the marine environment. The I Pad is hard to see in sunlight from angles other than direct head on. The cost $800 + app vs $1500 difference is not that much when yoiu consider longevity.
IPAD works for me as a good backup or secondary source.
