Now THAT sounds like a writing prompt, J!!!
There is a LOT of reasons people get into this life... too many to name. Most do it because they love sailing/boating and want a get-away for the weekends. Some do it because they are prepping to go cruising. Some do it because they are cruising. And some do it because I am convinced they have nowhere else to go. We will leave the last ones out of this discussion. However, I think most are shocked at the camaraderie they find on the docks and with other sailors. I believe that camaraderie is what keeps them coming long after the "new boat fever" has worn off (and it does wear off). I think it is the life and the people that make this such a wonderful adventure... not just the places and certainly not just the sailing. Even the people that come from a land-life and didn't know their neighbors may soon find themselves the Mayors of the Marina and hosting every get-together.
SO to answer your question, in my humble opinion, I think the environment shapes them... or lets them be the person they really are inside and just have not felt they had the place to show it.
Your thoughts???
