Nicely told story. You are pretty brave to try and DIY install a furler. When we replaced ours I had the shops rigger do it in, yes, about 2 hours. I was afraid I would damage the foil if I tried to do it myself so I let them do it. The Furlex 101 came with a new fore stay.
Did you lubricate the upper and lower units of the furler? Owner's manual should have instructions on how to lube your furler.
