Re: Princess Louisa Inlet - lots of motoring?

Both times we've been up that way we had a terrific sail in inflow winds as far as the last turn into the final reach. Just avoid sailing close to the 'corners', as you'll get caught in the lee of the point becalmed with whitecaps 100 yds away!

Both times we left we pretty much motored to Dark Cove, but we left really early. It's quite possible with the right weather pattern that you could ride the tail end of our typical overnight outflow winds - theoretically spinnakering in and out.

August is more likely to be calmer, and motoring both ways is not out of the question. Certainly you'll be motoring Malibu and the length of Princess Louisa itself.

If you can help it, don't plan to catch a late afternoon or evening slack.. nobody leaves then, the dock will be crowded and anchoring is tricky. There are also several uncharted boulders strewn along the shore where it is anchorable.. if the tide's up in the evening shade these are hard to spot.

Dark cove is a decent marshalling spot.. about 3-4 miles closer than Egmont. There's a shallow ledge in front of a couple of abandoned cabins. IIRC it's 35 or so miles to Malibu from there.

If you have to leave to catch an early slack, before daylight I doubt there's a darker place on earth!!
