Apparently the trick is in the TZ tape, which is a 3-layer laminate, not like the cheaper tapes that are just "burned" in the label maker. The cheaper (one layer) tapes are thermally "burned" to make the black printing, and they will eventually turn all-black from ambient heat. The TZ series actually transfer the "ink" to a substrate, then cover it with a top layer, so what you've got in the finished label has no way to change. (At least, no way to go all black, although I'd guess the layers could come apart in time.)

WalMart also carries the stuff, although apparently random models and tapes are stocked. Still isn't cheap but routinely cheaper than the office supply stores.
